Frequently asked questions.

What is the best time to visit Kenya?

Kenya is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on your interests:

  • Wildlife Viewing: The dry season from June to October is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around waterholes, making them easier to spot. This is also when the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara occurs.
  • Beach Holidays: The coastal areas, including Mombasa and Diani, are perfect year-round. However, for slightly cooler weather, December to March is ideal.

Rainy Seasons: The long rains occur from April to May, while the short rains happen in November and December.

Is visa needed to travel to Kenya and Tanzania?

Kenya: For you to visit Kenya, you are required to have the travel authorization called Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an online travel authorization that allows travelers from eligible countries to enter Kenya for tourism, business, or transit purposes without the need for a physical visa. This document can be obtained online within 3 working days or more, prior to the start of the journey and is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued.

You will need the following for application purposes on the link https://etakenya.go.ke/

  • Valid passport for at least six months after your planned date of arrival into Kenya with at least one blank page.
  • Passport type photo.
  • Contact information, email address and phone numbers
  • Details of your arrival and departure itinerary.
  • Accommodation booking confirmation(s)
  • Credit card, debit card and other means of payment.

Tanzania: For you to visit Tanzania, you are required to have an e-Visa (electronic visa) which is applied online  https://visa.immigration.go.tz/  This online authorization allows travelers from eligible countries to enter Tanzania—including mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar—for tourism, business, medical, or transit purposes without a physical visa.

Once applied online, the e-Visa is typically processed within a 2-10 working days and is valid for 90 days from issuance.

Required Documents & Information

  • Valid passport: At least 6 months validity beyond your planned date of arrival, with at least one blank page
  • Passport-type photo and a scanned copy of the passport bio page
  • Contact information: email address, phone number, home address
  • Travel itinerary: confirmed inbound and outbound flight details (arrival and departure tickets) — or visa applicants often include “proof of onward travel” explanation when flights are flexible/repeating routes
  • Accommodation booking confirmations: hotel or lodge reservations; you can enter the primary property from your itinerary
  • Payment method: valid credit or debit card (Tanzania e-Visa fees typically $50 for single entry; $100 for multiple entry for U.S. nationals)

Additional Requirements (depending on your profile)

  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate: mandatory if you arrive from or transit through a country listed as high-risk (including Kenya, Uganda, DRC, Rwanda, South Sudan, etc.)

Referral visa requirement: some nationalities (e.g., Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, etc.) must apply in advance and receive immigration approval before e-Visa issuance

What Vaccinations are mandatory?

Kenya requires travelers to present proof of yellow fever vaccination if they are coming from or have transited through a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission.

  • Yellow Fever Certificate: You must carry a yellow fever vaccination certificate as proof of vaccination if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission.
  • Countries with a Risk of Yellow Fever: These typically include countries in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South America. However, if you’re traveling from a country that does not have yellow fever, this requirement may not apply.
  • Timing of Vaccination: The yellow fever vaccination must be administered at least 10 days before your arrival in Kenya. This is because the vaccine takes about 10 days to provide effective immunity.

In addition to yellow fever, travelers should ensure that they are up-to-date on routine vaccinations. While these are not mandatory for entry into Kenya, they are strongly recommended to prevent potential health risks during your trip.

  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine.
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine.
  • Polio vaccine.
  • Influenza (Flu) vaccine, especially during flu season.

 Malaria Prevention

While malaria is not a vaccine-preventable disease, malaria prevention is highly recommended for travelers visiting certain areas of Kenya, especially rural or coastal regions.

  • Anti-Malaria Medications: Your healthcare provider may prescribe antimalarial medications for you to take before, during, and after your trip to prevent malaria.
  • Insect Repellents: In addition to taking malaria medication, use insect repellents and sleep under mosquito nets to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.

Is travel insurance necessary?

It is advisable to have travel/medical insurance that covers medical expenses, including evacuation if needed. This will ensure that you are covered in the event of an illness or emergency while traveling in Kenya.

What is the acceptable currency and payment Methods?

Currency: The official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), although US dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas.

Payments can be done with Cash or ATMs and Credit Cards: ATMs are available in major cities, and most international credit cards (Visa, MasterCard) are accepted in larger hotels, restaurants, and shops. However, it’s advisable to carry some cash in local currency for smaller establishments

What are the essentials to pack for a Kenya safari?

When preparing for a safari in Kenya, it’s important to pack wisely to ensure you’re comfortable, safe, and able to fully enjoy the experience. Here’s a list of essential items to bring on your safari:

  • Light, breathable clothing: Safari trips often require long hours under the sun. Lightweight, neutral-colored clothing (like khaki, beige, and olive) is ideal to blend in with the environment and avoid attracting insects.
  • Long-sleeved shirts & pants: These helps protect you from sunburns, dust, and mosquito bites, especially during early morning or evening game drives when insects are most active.
  • Jacket or sweater: It can get chilly early in the morning and at night, so having a warm layer is recommended.
  • Comfortable shoes: Opt for sturdy, closed-toe shoes for walking safaris or bush walks.
  • Hat and sunglasses: To protect yourself from the sun’s rays.
  • Swimwear: Some safari lodges have pools, so bring swimwear if you’d like to take a dip.
  • Toiletries: Toilet papers, toothpaste, toothbrushes etc.
  • Binoculars: These are essential for spotting wildlife from a distance, especially for birds or animals that might be further away.
  • Camera with extra memory cards and batteries: You’ll want to capture the beauty of the wildlife, so bring a good camera. Make sure to carry spare batteries or a power bank as electricity might not always be available.
  • Sunscreen: High-SPF sunscreen is essential, especially for your face and neck, as you’ll be in direct sunlight for long periods.
  • Insect repellent: Mosquitoes can be common, so make sure to pack a good insect repellent with DEET, particularly for the evenings.
  • Flashlight or headlamp: Useful for night-time activities or moving around your accommodation after dark.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated during your safari, and it’s always a good idea to bring your own reusable bottle.
  • Snacks: Pack some light snacks like granola bars or nuts for energy during long safari drives.
  • Plastic bags: For keeping any dirty or wet clothes separate from clean ones.
  • Pack light: Safari vehicles have limited space, so try to avoid overpacking.

Avoid bright colors or patterns: These can attract insects or disturb the animals, so stick to neutral, earth-tone colors.
