Mt. Kenya Trekking Safaris’ Information
Tourism is ever on the increase-not surprisingly! In this varied and interesting country. But we realize that being a tourist is not always easy, especially for those who enjoy physical activity. After long hours spent sitting in minibuses, it is refreshing to know that there is at least one place in Kenya where you can stretch your legs- and work off some of the extra calories you have accumulated from those fancy buffet luncheons.
A Six-Day Foot Safari to Mt. Kenya
Designed for those who have a minimum amount of time and who want to reach the third highest peak Pt. Lenana. This challenging, non-technical ascent can be made by any healthy person.
Day 1: Nairobi – Chogoria – Chogoria Gate Camp
You will depart from Nairobi at 7:00 am, driving through the agricultural country to Chogoria town for lunch. After lunch, you will take a 4x4 and drive up to the edge of the bamboo forest, where you will start trekking through the dense bamboo forest for a distance of 10km up to Mount Kenya Bandas. Your dinner and overnight stay will be at the Chogoria Gate Camp.
Day 2: Chogoria Gate Camp – Lake Ellis Camp
After breakfast and sorting of porter loads, you will set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace. A slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithanguni, and the Giants Billiards Table. At the same time, if you follow the river near the road and head upstream for about 3km, the foreground scenery and flora are breathtaking.
You will have lunch on the banks of a stream. Afterwards, you will cut up on the left-hand hillside to your camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more "touristy" areas.
Day 3: Lake Ellis Camp – Mintos Hut
You will have an early start. Again, you will walk well off the beaten track to follow a ridge up the mountain for about 3 hours and eventually join the tourist track on the regular Chogoria route at an altitude of about 4,100m. You will experience breathtaking views over the Gorges Valley and back towards Ithanguni and the Northern Moorlands.
Your lunch will be served at a small stream crossing before continuing for an additional hour to the Mintos Hut area at 4200m and our night's rest.
The afternoon is spent relaxing at camp, though a 10-minute walk to the "temple" is well worth the effort. This is a 150m vertical cliff that got its name from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge—they look as if they are praying.
Day 4: Mintos Hut – Austrian Hut
Today, you will begin your trek ascending along the foot of massive rock walls. From the top, you'll have an excellent view of Mt. Kenya. After ascending for a few hours, you will reach Tooth Col. From there, you will traverse until you reach the Austrian Hut for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 5: Austrian Hut – Lenana Point & Shiptons Camp – Liki North Camp
You will leave at 5:00 am for a pre-dawn attempt, climbing for 1 hour across bare rock and slopes characteristic of the alpine region up to Pt Lenana—the hiker's summit. You will arrive just in time to catch the African sunrise. You'll then descend to Shipton's Camp for breakfast and a short rest.
After breakfast, you will begin a 3-4-hour descent via Mackinder's Valley to Liki North camp (3,900 m). The descent is gentle and offers ample time to enjoy fascinating scenery which includes the moorlands, before reaching the camp.
Day 6 Liki North Camp – Old Moses Camp – Nairobi
After an early morning breakfast, you will descend for 3 hours up to Old Moses Camp to catch a vehicle for transfer to Nairobi. You will arrive late in the afternoon.

Health and Fitness Requirements
Anyone contemplating one of our expeditions should take regular exercise. It is recommended that you start a training program at least one, if not two months before your safari. “Running, swimming, cycling and stair-climbing are all good ways of toning up muscles.”
Seasons for climbing mt. Kenya
It has been generally accepted that our climbing seasons are from mid-December to mind- March and from mid-June -to the end of September. However, these traditional weather patterns seem to be the exception rather than the rule: the chances of encountering good weather on the mountain seem to be about equal throughout the year, so the timing of your safari is not as critical as once was.
Guides
Our professional local guides provide quality service on all our safaris.

All meals for the treks is either fresh or tinned. The porters and guides are trained in cookery and service.
